Deputy Superintendent New York State Police

Inspirational Story

My story started on July 10, 1963, when my mom and dad brought me into this world, and I became the 7th and youngest member of the Ersing clan. Having 4 older brothers and being so close in age, six years younger than my oldest brother Bob, we all became best friends, and had each other’s back. My mom was a stay-at-home mom of five and my dad worked seven days a week to support his family as a mason. Working for a company during the week and side work on the weekend. My brothers all followed in my dad’s footsteps becoming accomplished foreman, laborers, and masons.

I chose another route and as the only girl and youngest I was the first member of our family to go to college, Buffalo State College, and graduate with a degree to teach.

During my tenure in high school and college I worked at a local diner, the Zider Zee, and became friends with some of the local New York State Troopers. I remember one of these amazing troopers gave me an application to become a New York State Trooper. I was dumbfounded because at the time I never gave it a thought, maybe because I was small, maybe because I was a female, but I knew I wasn’t happy with my career choice, so I decided to give it a try.

I remember my dad dropping me off at the New York State Police Academy. At 22 years old, I had never been away from home, and I felt so alone but knew I had to succeed and get through the long six-month para-military academy. I loved every minute of it! The six months flew by, and I was sent to Watertown, New York, where I began my career.

Over the next 36 years, yes 36 years, I changed my career path within the New York State Police several times …... Uniform Trooper (on the road), Undercover Narco Investigator, Investigator, Terrorism Border Enforcement Unit, then rose through the Commissioned Officer ranks to Colonel, Deputy Superintendent, one of only 3 women to reach this rank in 105 years in charge of Employee Relations/HR and dealing with issues that are important to a person’s work life, such as professional development, training, medical, contracts, employee assistance programs and so forth.

It was an amazing career and shows that anything is possible if you work hard and give 110% every day. A young girl from Western, New York, who entered a predominately male workforce at the time, was able to make a difference and give back to her community.

Now in retirement I am giving back to my community the gift of fitness. I obtained my NASM certification and became a Certified Personal Trainer. I truly believe that fit ness is the key to long life and contributes a great deal to your happiness, mental health, and welfare.
